Ok, so I started researching the orphan Works Act as it is currently making the go round and here is what I discovered:
1) If you want to read the actual document please go here: http://copyright.gov/orphan/reports/orphan-works2015.pdf This is actually the 234 page review and recommendation to congress about revisions to the current copyright acts.
2) This was a report and recommendation put together by the Registrar of Copyrights after collecting roundtable conversations, reports and looking at current and past as well as foreign copyright laws in general and in relation to "Orphan Works". This is NOT a bill currently before congress as ha

Exploring Art 12: Being yourself
Hey guys. I'm back in town and I'll write a whole thing on my flight with Zeus, but I have this in my head and I need to type it out before I forget. Once again I am just thinking out loud and 'you' is also me talking to myself, not just to everyone reading. I don't have all the answers, I just have thoughts and questions, and sometimes ideas.
Everyone always says 'Be yourself' and expects you to really know what that means and how to do it. Then we all flounder around trying to figure out who we are and how to make who we are work in the art we do. It gets scary, especially when the doubts set in. What if 'yourself' isn't good enough? What

On pricing your artwork and creating a career...
I am going to be speaking at an "Entrepreneurship In The Arts" program later today, and I've been organizing my thoughts. One subject that is certain to come up; "how do you arrive at a fair price for your original artwork?" I have some definite ideas regarding that question.
I was always told that the accepted model for artists and artisans, when it comes to pricing, was double your costs for materials, figure out an hourly price (double that for your retail price if you plan to have wholesale/retail differentials), add it up and there's your item price. I think this model is pure bullshit.
I was also told "charge what the market will b

Exploring Art 16: How much is too much?
Good morning everyone! I hope you all had a fantastic day!
This question has come up a few times for me lately, both from friends wondering how much to charge, and from people asking 'how do you price your work and why are you able to do those sales you do?' It can be a bit rough sometimes, as an artist... Knowing the right path, knowing what to charge and what would be fair for both you and your customer. Pricing work is a really unique experience for each artist. Remember, only you can really know what you feel comfortable with selling your work at, so don't be ashamed of the prices you set! But when you do set your prices here are some t

Expose-Lit: Tip Guide on Talking to People
Here at Expose-Lit (https://www.deviantart.com/expose-lit), we hope to give deviants opportunities to find their way within the Literature community. We all know what it is like to be “new,” to be out of the “loop,” or to wonder where to turn to for help. We also know how daunting it can be at times to feel comfortable talking to other deviants within the community. Below, you will find just a few helpful tips on how to get started.
I’m New To DA Lit: Where Do I Start?
Well, this is easier than you might think!

Yes its that time of year now. Sniffling and sneezes, bitter cold mornings and ppl are catching the sickness. I on the other hand couldn't have caught an even worse virus. The most dreaded, confidence crushing, esteem weakening, FRUSTRATING sickness the creative mind can ever contract.....do I dare speak its name? yes, I have artist block!
It couldn't have come at a worse time for me, everything is so dark and eerie outside now, misty mornings and beautiful dusk with amazing twilight skies. Why in God's name did I have to get artist block at a time like this. Well I'm beating a dead Hor...wall on this one. No reason to complain and w
I have often found while doing research on kimono, geisha, or various related subjects that I come across a piece of information that has not been elaborated very well. The basics on these subjects are easy to find anywhere. Any basic page on kimono will explain that it literally means "thing to wear" and that geisha are "people of the arts". But there are many finer points of interest that I have only found through copious amounts of research or simply through personal experience, and these are the things that I find especially interesting about these subjects. So, I thought it would be fun to explain some of them whenever I have the tim
I remember thinking at the end of 2010 that I was glad the year was over, and that I planned on making 2011 a better year. That hasn't quite played out the way I hoped, and so here I find myself again, glad this year is over and hoping for better for the next.
How many years will I waste hoping for a better one to come? I plan on this being the last.
Many things changed this year; people I counted on being around for the long haul left, without warning or provocation. Things I hoped would take a turn for the better took a turn for the worse. Things I hoped I would accomplish didn't come to pass, either from lack of motivation or abundance o

Rock, Paper, Scissors... yah, right...
"I understand how scissors can beat paper, and I get how a rock can beat scissors, but there's no fucking way paper can beat rock. Is paper supposed to magically wrap around rock and leave it immobile? Why the hell can't paper do this to scissors? Screw scissors, why can't paper do this to people? Why aren't sheets of college ruled notebook paper constantly suffocating students as they take notes in class? I'll tell you why, because paper can't beat anybody. A rock would tear that shit up in 2 seconds. When I play rock paper scissors, I alway choose rock. Then when somebody claims to have beaten me with their paper I can punch them in

Do let's remember to go thank nycterent (https://www.deviantart.com/nycterent) for her superb service as a Gallery Moderator/Community Volunteer. Web sites change, drama ebbs and flows, but good people and good effort are why this site is unique. Naiya is good people. Tell her so.
And yeah, spyed (https://www.deviantart.com/spyed) has shaken the Etch-A-Sketch again. Sta.sh is here, and from my brief fooling around with it, it looks pretty cool. News articles are gone and now Journals can be faved. While that does a great deal for consistenc
